5 Best Months to Visit Peniche

Keeping in mind that our priorities include: good waves, no crowds, sun, and fun, we’ve put together a list of the 5 best months to visit Peniche.  Our picks may surprise you; read through for all the inside info:

5.) MAY

The long pre-summer days stretch out the surfing window, and you can go at different times to avoid the mid-season crowds – (think sunrise!) Swells are smaller and conditions can be nice to take out the longboard and cruise.  Beginner and Intermediate surf students enjoy this month immensely!

4.) DECEMBER

Average rainfall in December is less than June! Winter is definitely the best time to avoid crowds and get lowest room rates.  Surfers take note – if you like it double overhead, December is your month.  Last minute travellers – check the forecast 1 week in advance for best days of swell and sun.

3.) NOVEMBER

Crowds thin out and it begins to look like low season. You can go to dinner without booking a table in advance, which for us is a big luxury! The surf conditions can be some of the best all year: 2 years ago we had 3 weeks of perfect waves in a row with blue skies and no wind.

2.) OCTOBER

Average temperatures in October are a bit higher than June, making it the 4th warmest month and unofficially still summer!  At the same time, swells begin to build and Peniche gets a taste of what the Atlantic can deliver.  The WSL Championship Tour comes to town in the later half of the month, bringing a fun atmosphere of pure stoke and the opportunity to watch your favorite pros in action!

1.) SEPTEMBER

September is the best month to visit Peniche because you can have the best mix of weather and waves.  The second warmest month after August, it hardly ever rains in September.  The kids go back to school and holiday goers leave the beach in droves.  The water is warm and ground swells are plentiful, while the likelihood of offshore winds increases.

In summary, the best time to take a surf trip to Peniche is not the Summer high season! Autumn into early Winter delivers the best conditions and fewer people in the lineup and around town.  Late spring can also bring some fun waves without the hassle.  Because the weather in Peniche changes so much, flexible travelers have an advantage if they can book last minute, to lock-in the best swell/sun combination.

Introducing our new Yoga Teacher

We are so excited to introduce our new yoga teacher for this season!

Meet Elisabeth Ippel : Yoga Coach – Reiki Therapist – Chakra Healer

Elizabeth has been practicing yoga for over 16 years, developing into a passionate yoga coach and healer.  She has been teaching and leading  yoga retreats around the world for the past 5 years.  Notably, she has been involved with Solar Impulse (the first solar plane to fly around the world www.solarimpulse.com), teaching Yoga to the founder and pilot André Borschberg, as well as to the whole team.

After learning to surf in Hawaii in 2016, Elisabeth decided to exchange mountain life in Switzerland for life near the ocean.  In May 2018, Elisabeth moved to Portugal with her husband and cat, and has been living the dream working remotely as a PR consultant.  Her daily routine includes long walks on the beach, surfing, and teaching yoga daily at the Lodge.

Elisabeth’s yoga classes are concentrated around the 7 chakras in the body. Chakras are energy points which are mostly out of balance as of our daily life and experiences. Those imbalances can be felt through physical pain like stiffness or by uncomfortable emotions like fear/ anger etc.. During her yoga sessions, students work on balancing those chakras.

Elisabeth’s yoga style is like a cocoon in which the students can relax into. It is important that everybody feels fully accepted and integrated, beginner as well as advanced.  She assists gently during the asanas with hands on while giving some Reiki so that everyone leaves with a full heart.

Classes are held Monday to Friday, and if you join all week, you will experience a balanced body and mind work out. Starting  with the the legs and arms, and working up to the hips, to the stomach (core stability) to the shoulders and the neck.

Guests who sign up for 5 surf lessons have 5 yoga sessions included in their package. Surfers will benefit from joining every day, as it will help them to get more stable as well as relaxed on their surfboards. They will have a better sense of their body while learning to surf or while learning new tricks on the surfboard. It will be also a good way to relax all the muscles they used during surfing sessions to be physically and mentally ready for the next day.

Elisabeth’s Qualifications

Certified Shiatsu 1 therapist, U.K. 2005

New Surf Bikes are here!

We’ve just received a batch of new surf bikes at the Lodge!  These stylish beach cruisers were made especially for us by Ronin Customs, a custom bike shop in Lisbon.

Taking a classic cruiser silhouette, and incorporating comfy banana seats and some recycled parts, Ronin has created a bike that inspires us to ride to the beach and beyond.

Equipped with surf racks, these bikes make it simple to go on a surf adventure around the area without a car.

Just strap in your board and go! No stress about traffic or finding a parking spot.

Nothing better than cruising around hunting waves, wind in your hair, board by your side.

Our bikes are FREE for our guests to use during their stay. Just ask in the Reception and they’ll hook you up!

Happy riding!

No more plastic bottles!

No more plastic bottles! This year we are focusing on reducing our plastic dependence. One easy way is to refuse single-use plastic water bottles and use your own re-fillable water bottle instead.

We are now selling these beauties in the Reception! They are made from the highest grade stainless steel and are completely BPA free. Buy one at check-in and get FREE purified water throughout your stay!

Our disposable culture needs to change, and we all play a part with the choices we make. We want to make it easy for our guests to choose useful, good looking products designed to last. We want to make it easier to skip single-use plastics while traveling.  It’s a choice that’s better for your health,  and better for the planet too.

Upcycling old wetsuits with FLAHICA

What to do when old wetsuits are past their prime? Call Inês Catarino!  Inês is one of our surf instructors, and creates one-of-a-kind bags made by hand, under the name FLAHICA.

In preparing our surf school for this season, we had some old wetsuits that we won’t use anymore.  Before putting them up for sale, we asked Inês to choose some of the most well-worn suits to upcycle into beautiful and useful bags, giving the material a whole new life.

She will layer the neoprene under fabric to create the padding for laptop cases, phone cases, and inner pockets for her signature surfboard bags.  This kind of creative re-use really inspires us! And we like to think the old wetsuit holds a bit of the surf spirit, bringing it into things you use every day.

We’re so stoked to have people like Inês on our team! Creative, hands-on, and dedicated to quality and reducing our environmental impact. Check out her Facebook page FLAHICA to see more styles and for contact information.

Pop Quiz – What is a Surf Hotel?

What is a Surf Hotel?

A.) A hotel located in one of the world’s best surf spots
B.) A hotel inspired by surf culture
C.) A hotel with a surf school
D.) A hotel for surfers, with places to store boards, tips for best spots for the conditions, and a place to hang your wetsuit
E.) All of the above
Our answer is, E.) All of the above

When we set out to create Surfers Lodge Peniche, we looked to create a prototype of the ideal Surf Hotel. We imagined a space for a traveler looking for a high standard of comfort, thoughtful design, and a full range of surf-related amenities. We wanted to combine the best aspects of a surf camp with the best aspects of a boutique hotel.
We already had a lot going for us with the location – Peniche – one of the best, most consistent surf spots in Europe. Peniche has been a WCT Tour Stop for the last 5 years, thanks not only to the most famous world-class wave Supertubos, but also to the availability of solid alternative spots up the coast when the wind is wrong.  Not just for the pros, the area is also perfect for beginners with an abundance of gentle sandy beach breaks. The varied coast creates favorable conditions somewhere within a short drive or even walk, no matter the wind or swell direction.  Peniche is easy to access, just an hour drive from Lisbon, which is quickly becoming a low cost destination from many major cities in Europe.
At the heart of Surfers Lodge Peniche is the desire to spread surf stoke to the world.  We wanted to create a Surf School that provides week-long group lessons for all levels, like other surf camps, but also private lessons and programs sculpted to fit individual schedules and commitment.  We encourage just trying it out to see if you like it! For the occasional surfer we provide board and wetsuit rentals; for the seasoned surf traveler there’s a place to store your board and hang your wetsuit. Learn about the area through our personal surf guiding; or explore on your own with forecasts and advice on the best spots to surf given the conditions.
We’ve always loved the social aspect of a surf camp – adventuresome people from around the world, coming together to share waves and stories.  At Surfers Lodge Peniche you’ll meet people from all walks of life who are connected to surf in some way, whether first-time beginners or veteran surfers chasing swells, or even those just interested in the surf vibe. It’s always a fun mix and you’re sure to meet people you wouldn’t at a “regular” hotel. In the summer we have weekly Sunset Parties on the terrace and BBQs with live music in the backyard.  The Lodge is perfect for families too, and we love to see all ages hanging out together in the cozy Living Room or taking surf lessons together.
Surfing (as you may know) makes you REALLY hungry, so we have a full-service Restaurant to provide yummy, casual food, served in surfer’s portions.  We try to use local ingredients wherever possible and we offer only Portuguese wines.  The menu has both a healthy and a hearty side, making sure you’ll always leave the table satisfied.
We wanted to offer all of the above in a space inspired by Vintage Surf Culture, designed with comfort as a big priority.  We wanted to create a homey feeling, (living room instead of lobby,) centered around the fireplace and seriously comfy sofas like a Lodge in the mountains.  At the same time we honor the luxurious hotel tradition of extra-nice beds and sheets.  Each room has an impeccable attention to artistic details, with objects collected from family travels and always a Scandinavian sensibility to materials.

7 Reasons Why You Should Take a Girls Surf Holiday

1. CHALLENGE YOURSELVES
This is not a Beach Holiday where you mostly lay around and work on your tan. A Surf Holiday is a chance to challenge yourselves and learn something new. Surfing is a tough workout and takes focus. The reward is that it is so much fun!

2. SUPPORT EACH OTHER
Learning to surf together is a great chance to be a supportive friend. Researchers at UCLA discovered when women are confronted with a challenging situation, they will encourage and support each other. The sudden release of oxytocin is more likely to inspire a “tend and befriend” reaction (vs. the classic “fight or flight”). In other words, you will be cheering for your girlfriends, sharing in their excitement, and learning in a supportive environment. The vibe is always better with more girls in the water!

3. CONNECT TO YOUR TRIBE
Friends that surf together, stay together. Your shared passion will bring you together for adventures all around the world for years to come. Your first Surf Holiday together won’t be your last! You’ll also meet new people who feel the same way you do about surfing, and the tribe will grow.

4. GET ADDICTED TO FUN
Once you catch your first wave, you’ll want nothing but to catch the second one. Surfing is a healthy addiction. It’s the one workout that never gets old. The better you get, the more fun you have. The more fun you have, the more you want to surf, and on and on. You won’t need your friends to push you to workout anymore. You’ll all be excited to go surfing!

5. EAT – A LOT
One of the best things about surfing is that it makes you really, really hungry. Food tastes so much better after a surf! Plus, you can forget about counting calories during your Surf Holiday: you’ll burn up every one in the water. Sweet potato fries? Yes please! Chocolate brownie- um, duh! Gettin’ your grub on with the ladies never felt better.

6. EMPOWER YOURSELVES
Surfing is empowering. Empowered women change the world.
Surfing can help you tap into your ambitious nature and keep you motivated to follow your dreams. Why not share that motivation with your best friends?

7. SURF INSTRUCTORS ARE HOT
Let’s face it, it’s not debatable. They are hot. So why not have them around while you’re changing the world… on your Girls Surf Holiday. Call it inspiration!
