Looking to book a holiday with your best girls, but don’t know where to go or what to do? Come to Surfers Lodge Peniche for a Girls Surf Holiday!

Here are 7 GOOD REASONS why you should:

1. CHALLENGE YOURSELVES
This is not a Beach Holiday where you mostly lay around and work on your tan. A Surf Holiday is a chance to challenge yourselves and learn something new. Surfing is a tough workout and takes focus. The reward is that it is so much fun!

2. SUPPORT EACH OTHER
Learning to surf together is a great chance to be a supportive friend. Researchers at UCLA discovered when women are confronted with a challenging situation, they will encourage and support each other. The sudden release of oxytocin is more likely to inspire a “tend and befriend” reaction (vs. the classic “fight or flight”). In other words, you will be cheering for your girlfriends, sharing in their excitement, and learning in a supportive environment. The vibe is always better with more girls in the water!

3. CONNECT TO YOUR TRIBE
Friends that surf together, stay together. Your shared passion will bring you together for adventures all around the world for years to come. Your first Surf Holiday together won’t be your last! You’ll also meet new people who feel the same way you do about surfing, and the tribe will grow.

4. GET ADDICTED TO FUN
Once you catch your first wave, you’ll want nothing but to catch the second one. Surfing is a healthy addiction. It’s the one workout that never gets old. The better you get, the more fun you have. The more fun you have, the more you want to surf, and on and on. You won’t need your friends to push you to workout anymore. You’ll all be excited to go surfing!

5. EAT – A LOT
One of the best things about surfing is that it makes you really, really hungry. Food tastes so much better after a surf! Plus, you can forget about counting calories during your Surf Holiday: you’ll burn up every one in the water. Sweet potato fries? Yes please! Chocolate brownie- um, duh! Gettin’ your grub on with the ladies never felt better.

6. EMPOWER YOURSELVES
Surfing is empowering. Empowered women change the world.
Surfing can help you tap into your ambitious nature and keep you motivated to follow your dreams. Why not share that motivation with your best friends?

6.SURF INSTRUCTORS ARE HOT
Let’s face it, it’s not debatable. They are hot. So why not have them around while you’re changing the world… on your Girls Surf Holiday. Call it inspiration!

Peniche is the best place in Portugal to learn to surf.  With many forgiving sand-bottom beach breaks and protected spots, there is always a gentle wave in the vicinity. The abundance of waves thins out the crowd, giving you more space to feel comfortable on your first waves.

Spring weather in Peniche Portugal is beautiful, but not tropical. Some days have full sun and almost 20 degrees, and sometimes a spring storm rolls through the North Atlantic. The good news is that Peniche, due to a unique varied shoreline, has surf beaches facing in nearly every direction, meaning the wind is always offshore somewhere. Moreover, a little rain never stopped a good surf session!

Spring means new beginnings.  There is a feeling in the air that will inspire you to work towards your goals and set out on new adventures. Make this Spring the beginning of your surf education! See you soon!

Surfers Lodge Peniche

Surfers Lodge Peniche

When we set out to create Surfers Lodge Peniche, we looked to create a prototype of the ideal Surf Hotel. We imagined a space for a traveler looking for a high standard of comfort, thoughtful design, and a full range of surf-related amenities. We wanted to combine the best aspects of a surf camp with the best aspects of a boutique hotel.

We already had a lot going for us with the location – Peniche – one of the best, most consistent surf spots in Europe. Peniche has been a WCT Tour Stop for the last 5 years, thanks not only to the most famous world-class wave Supertubos, but also to the availability of solid alternative spots up the coast when the wind is wrong.  Not just for the pros, the area is also perfect for beginners with an abundance of gentle sandy beach breaks. The varied coast creates favorable conditions somewhere within a short drive or even walk, no matter the wind or swell direction.  Peniche is easy to access, just an hour drive from Lisbon, which is quickly becoming a low cost destination from many major cities in Europe.

At the heart of Surfers Lodge Peniche is the desire to spread surf stoke to the world.  We wanted to create a Surf School that provides week-long group lessons for all levels, like other surf camps, but also private lessons and programs sculpted to fit individual schedules and commitment.  We encourage just trying it out to see if you like it! For the occasional surfer we provide board and wetsuit rentals; for the seasoned surf traveler there’s a place to store your board and hang your wetsuit. Learn about the area through our personal surf guiding; or explore on your own with forecasts and advice on the best spots to surf given the conditions.

We’ve always loved the social aspect of a surf camp – adventuresome people from around the world, coming together to share waves and stories.  At Surfers Lodge Peniche you’ll meet people from all walks of life who are connected to surf in some way, whether first-time beginners or veteran surfers chasing swells, or even those just interested in the surf vibe. It’s always a fun mix and you’re sure to meet people you wouldn’t at a “regular” hotel. In the summer we have weekly Sunset Parties on the terrace and BBQs with live music in the backyard.  The Lodge is perfect for families too, and we love to see all ages hanging out together in the cozy Living Room or taking surf lessons together.

Surfing (as you may know) makes you REALLY hungry, so we have a full-service Restaurant to provide yummy, casual food, served in surfer’s portions.  We try to use local ingredients wherever possible and we offer only Portuguese wines.  The menu has both a healthy and a hearty side, making sure you’ll always leave the table satisfied.

We wanted to offer all of the above in a space inspired by Vintage Surf Culture, designed with comfort as a big priority.  We wanted to create a homey feeling, (living room instead of lobby,) centered around the fireplace and seriously comfy sofas like a Lodge in the mountains.  At the same time we honor the luxurious hotel tradition of extra-nice beds and sheets.  Each room has an impeccable attention to artistic details, with objects collected from family travels and always a Scandinavian sensibility to materials.

For the traveler that really wants to focus on surf,  winter is the perfect time to come to Baleal. Surf spots begin to empty out just as the prevailing winds begin to change direction, opening up dozens of new peaks up the gorgeous northern coastline. Not only are waves less crowded, but so are parking lots, restaurants, and bars, making everything generally more pleasant. You won’t have the temptation of sunset parties or outdoor happy hours to set you off track. In fact, you’ll have few distractions at all from your surf program.

In fact, winter can be a great time to learn to surf! Class sizes are generally smaller, and you might even find yourself with an unplanned private lesson! Lack of crowds will make you feel more comfortable in the water, and you’ll take more waves, speeding progress.  After surfing in colder water with bigger waves, anything else will seem easy!

The last few winters have been generally quite sunny and warm here in Baleal.  Although of course the North Atlantic does bring the inevitable winter storms, they pass through in a day or two and the sun returns.  It’s not unusual to have temperatures hovering around 20 degrees for most of a week. That said, we aren’t in the business of guaranteeing the weather, but the abundance of Low Cost Airlines with flights throughout Europe makes it easy to plan your trip ‘last minute.’ Once you feel comfortable with the professional weather/wave forecast, you can book with us here.

1. Fitness-

The stereotype of the hot surfer does have some truth to it.  Surfing is absolutely a great work out. From paddling to pop-up to riding waves, surfing works your upper body, core, lower back, and hips, and builds stamina.  Duck diving and hold-downs build greater lung capacity.  After surf, food tastes better, you’ll sleep better, and that post surf chill-out will take you to new levels of relaxation. As you progress in your surfing, the desire to improve will grow.  This can motivate you to make healthier life choices and dedicate more time to your overall fitness.

2. Travel-

For some travel is the only way to score waves; for others its just part of the unending search for more perfect conditions.  Surf travel can take you to a tropical paradise like Fiji or to the icy waters of Norway.  Inevitably you will explore new places and learn about new cultures as you immerse yourself in new line-ups, opening yourself to an expanded understanding of the world. Peniche, Portugal is one of the best places to find good waves in Europe, with stunning natural coastline and a warm local culture.

3. Respect for Nature-

Surfing builds a strong connection to your natural surroundings.  Surfers have a keen awareness of winds, tides, and weather, because being in tune with the ebb and flow of the earth makes it possible to find the best waves.  Simply spending so much time immersed in nature can create a newfound respect for the environment. It’s no surprise that many surfers are also environmentalists, actively working to preserve coastlines and clean up the oceans.

4. Confidence-

Surfing is not an easy sport to learn: You often have to overcome fear and even physical pain to reach your goals, while spending lots of uncomfortable hours in wetsuits and cold water.  But when at last you do succeed, the adrenaline of success will be proportionate to the difficulty of the task. The confidence you build as you learn to surf is made of hard work and persistence, which no doubt will carry over to all areas of life.

5. Fun-

In spite of what is written above, surfing is actually FUN! The feeling of catching a wave is pure fun, like being a little kid on Christmas.  When you experience this feeling, you’ll be left wanting more, and soon you’ll be hooked!
